How to pass safely out of Office Job Interview

As a HR professional, one of your most difficult and distasteful duties is to fire employees. Usually it is not because they are bad people or employees, but perhaps the company is streamlining or they are not suited to that particular position or to the company in general.

 

You know that once they are out the door, that person might need some help finding a new position. This is where, as a HR professional, you can include these four steps to help make the process a positive experience instead of a devastating blow:

  1. Don’t make excuses. Let the person know exactly why they are being let go and where they stand.
  2. Provide a glowing, written reference. Even if they are being fired for their shortcomings, point out their strengths and include an up to date contact number of a colleague or manager who enjoyed working with them.
  3. Help update their resume. Not everyone has a knack for resume writing, but as a HR professional, you know what future employees will be looking for in a resume, what will catch their eye and what will turn them away. So take 5 minutes to review their resume and make suggestions.
